Top 5 Reasons I Ride My Bike to Church & Work

On my way to church this morning I had a thought… Why don’t more people (in Dayton, OH) ride bikes? After pondering this unfortunate reality I thought of 5 reasons why I ride my bike to work, church and pretty much anywhere I can.

1. It saves us money! We budget about $300/month for gas! And if I can put even the smallest dent in that chunk of change then I’m all for it!

2. The physical benefits! from my house to work and back burns about 300 calories! Not to mention the resistance on my legs helps to build lean muscle… boom-chicka-wow-wow!

3. The AC on my bike is better than the AC in my car! I drive a 22 year old car and the AC doesn’t work. That combined with the engine heat and the valuer seats makes my car a hot box in the summer!

4. My church doesn’t have a dress code! Thanx to PB&J (Pastors Bob & Jamila) for not making MarketPlace Ministries another stuffy/traditional church where people feel out of place if they don’t have on a suit!

5. I don’t get picked to go get lunch! For some reason, the good people at my job tend to pick me to be the lunch go-getter. This isn’t a big deal, but for some unknown, cosmic reason JM’s lunch always comes back wrong when I go pick it up… and I think he suspects me!

My hope is that cycling will catch on and folks will grab hold of the concept and run with it! Ultimately, I ride because it helps me to be a good steward over God’s money and His Temple (my body).

Peace & Love ya’ll…

I’m so irked…

I have to confess that when I hear preachers preaching a message that is incredibly general or vague and offer no real tools for practical application I am severely aggravated! I recently heard a message where the preacher was doing the typical whoop and holler and it made me think about all of those messages that I heard early in my walk with Christ that stirred up a lot of emotion but not much else.

I remember sitting in the pews thinking… “is that it?”. Don’t get me wrong, I never want to be critical of anyone speaking the Word of God, but I do hope for a more over all message. A message that not only excites me, but inspires me to change something. Maybe the way I conduct myself, or the way I speak, but if all I’m hearing is everything is gonna be great… well that bothers me! Everything won’t be great! There will be times of distress and heartache, but the promise of God is to comfort and we need to know that!

Just my thoughts… I think I needed to vent more than anything.

Random Thoughts…

I had the fortunate opportunity to vote today! Some of the things I noticed were both inspiring and saddening…

  1. Over 2000 people had voted in the last four hours in this location alone.
  2. People voted today that NEVER have voted before (and they’re over 18 years of age)!
  3. (like it or leave it) People are voting because they’re inspired and moved by a different kind of politician.
  4. There’s an energy that is inexplicable and NO ONE complained about the wait! wow…

Down Right Demoralizing!!!

  1. Young men REALLY don’t realize that sagging pants means ‘something else’ in prison!
  2. Tight clothing for women, apparently, is fashionable no matter how much you weigh… don’t get me wrong, I’m a ‘big dog’, but you won’t see ME in spandex! (unless it’s on the bike path)
  3. (last but not least) With all of these new voters and unlikely voters, there are still some out there who don’t see the importance of voting… : (

What are you into???

Word of Faith will be starting small groups after the first of the year! YIPPIE!!! I’m extremly excited about this because it gives us an awesome platform to build community in our church. People will have a constructive outlet to, not only to talk about ‘stuff’, but to find God centered solutions to ‘stuff’.

We plan to have three types of groups; Bible Study Groups which focus on sermon/series topics, Special Interest Groups that do fun stuff together and Focus Groups that focus on specific demographics like marital status or something like that.

One of the things I’m trying to figure out as it relates to the Special Interest Groups is… what are we into??? So anyone out there who has a suggestions… drop a line.

Random Idea

OK, random idea: Next Thanks Giving we can have a competition among Word of Faith’s small groups. The group that signs up the most people for and gives away the most Thanks Giving baskets wins a prize like diner at a nice restaurant or something.

What ya think???

God is Full of Grace and Mercy

The lord blessed me with a word today. I was given the charge to preach aa message on Word of Faith’s 5th ministerial anniversary and The Lord sho nuff spoke to and through me. I’m completely humbled by what he said and did today. Folks told me that what was said helped and that it really had an impact and that’s all I want from a message, to know that God’s word had an affect and that someone could be changed (for the better) as a result. I think that too many times, preachers preach in order to appear a certain way or to glorify themselves. This is NOT my intent AT ALL! I’ve learned to only focus on the message and what it’s supposed to do, persuade someone to come to Him. God; I can only imagine how it makes The Lord feel when we use His platform to bring attention to ourselves. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to hurt my LORD’s feelings.

Goodie, Goodie, Gumdorps!!!

OK, the lil man’s here! I want to thank God. Your mercy and grace afforded us a complication free delivery and a healthy baby boy! My Wife. You leaned on God and His promises, trusted in Him and believed with me for a miracle! Our Pastors. Not only have you prayed for us but you have played an extremely key and vital role in our spiritual growth, personal development and OUR MARRIAGE! You two have taught us so much about how to have a happy and successful marriage as well as maintain a God centered family. Crystal and I praise God for the both of you, THANX! To my mom, though you probably won’t ever read this, (pray for the technologically challenged) you have been the vessel that God chose to use to make me who I am, to be a help to us in times of need and to be an awesome friend! You mean volumes to us. To our friends and extended family, thank you for your prayers and support and God bless you all! THANX everybody and pictures are soon to come.

Down to the wire…

OK, we went to the doctor yesterday and she told us that we were going to induce labor on this Tuesday. I am getting more and more excited about this “lil fella” as Crystal calls him. We have this little fleece potato sack thingy for him, some night gowns (and who said this was OK for a boy?), and some booties to wear home and I’m starting to get misty here… OK, I pulled it together… All in all I’m ready to see my 4th born and begin to prophesy all over him!

What the HECK am I doing???!!!

Is anyone out there unsure of why you’re doing what you’re doing? Are you frustrated professionally, sick of your job, but unsure about what your supposed to be doing? If so you are in a boat with a lot of folks. I know that there is a large number of people who are tired of doing what they’re doing, but haven’t the faintest idea on how to get out. So I’m going to offer five (5) steps to get out of your professional and possibly spiritual ruts:

  1. Prayer. The first thing that we have to do in order to get out of any issue or find a solution to any problem is to consult God. If you don’t have a relationship with God and you want one, feel free to email me at and we can start a dialogue on salvation.
  2. Assessment. After you have repented of any “stuff” and The Lord has shown you that you should be, I don’t know, painting for a living instead of trying to work with kids, then you need to do an interest/career assessment (a simple google search will show several good ones) to find out where your strengths are. Anyone trying to function either professionally or spiritually in a capacity that their not gifted and called to do is wasting their time and usually someone else’s also.
  3. Education/Training. The common miss-conception is that you have to have a college degree to make a good living. This isn’t entirely true. Depending on what it is your passionate about doing for a living, you may only need certification or vocational training. What ever it is you should research the career field and determine what level of education you need.
  4. Diligence. OK, you know your destiny, you have done an assessment, you’ve received your credentials and now your ready to start looking. The most important thing needed to find employment is diligence. Look at the ant and think about how it does stuff…
  5. Take the leap of faith. It’s hard to leave what seems comfortable to us. But once you’ve made the determination that you’re going to do God’s will for your life, you only have two choices: do it, or don’t! I hope you decide to do it because there are so many benefits to being in His will (which we’ll discuss in another post)…

Once you step out and you start your new “thing” be prepared for difficulties, and trying moments. These things must come in order to prepare you for where God wants you. Just remember that God allows us to be tried in order to thoroughly purify us like gold, and he’ll never put more on you than you can bare. Let me know where you are, let’s start a dialogue…
